Register for the do-not-call list
One way to reduce harassment and fraudulent activity is to eliminate pestering telemarketers. This can be done quite easily by adding your phone number into the National Do Not Call Registry. To register your telephone number(s):
- Go to www.donotcall.gov
- Click on "Register a Phone Number"
- Follow the steps listed
After a verification email is sent to your email address, you should be placed on the Do Not Call List. If you would like to further verify your registration you can:
- Return to www.donotcall.gov
- Select "Verify a Registration"
- Follow the steps listed
Once your phone number has been in the Registry for 31 days, telemarketers should no longer call you. If phone calls continue after 31 days, you can file a complaint on the website for free by:
- Selecting "Submit a Complaint" on www.donotcall.gov
- Fill out and submit the appropriate form
Important notes:
- Scammers may call claiming to represent the National Do Not Call Registry. These phone calls are NOT from the Registry, DO NOT respond to these calls
- Complaints should only be filed after 31 days, when the Do Not Call Registry takes full effect
- Complaints may also be made on voice automated messages
- Some organizations may still be able to reach you after registration, such as: political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors, etc.
- Debt collectors may also still be able to reach you after registration. A link to file a complaint about a debt collector is on the "Submit a Complaint" page of www.donotcall.gov or you can go to https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx
